Livin’ the sweet life

I often get distracted by the sometimes monotonous life we live here. Biking to work everyday, counting down the days until the weekend, then inevitably the weekend comes and goes before we’ve had a chance to notice. But this week at work, I mastered puff pastry. After about 3 “repairs” of the aircon, 4 pounds of butter, and 5 kilos of flour, I finally got that perfectly flakey pastry I was looking for!

What I tend to forget, way too often, is how incredibly awesome of an opportunity I have here. I am able to test and practice any number of desserts that I have ever had an interest in learning, with practically endless ingredients. It is the perfect setup. In the States, I lived and breathed cake decorating. But being completely consumed with learning new decorating techniques, I never found the time to practice what I really needed work on, baking. Not only was I short on time, but ingredients can get expensive, and learning on your own means lots of mistakes. And eggs..and butter..and sugar…and flour..the list in endless.

I am extremely blessed to have this job. I can’t imagine many opportunities where I’d be able to learn so much and earn a salary.  These are a few of my favorite little creations.

  1. These desserts look amazing and I bet they’re scrumptious! I’m glad to see they let you experiment with new recipes and be your creative self. You will have such an awesome résumé once you return home with all that you’re learning and experiencing in China.
We love you and miss you! ❤️ Looking forward to seeing you at Christmas!! 🎄⛄️

  2. Good garden seed “Little Bit”, these look absolutely AMAZING!! I’m so proud of you … I mean you’ve gone from someone who really didn’t enjoy baking (I’m sure because like you said, experimentation can be very expensive) to a person who seems to be excelling in the baking department!!!!! Now, if you don’t mind … I’d like you to ship one of each of those desserts to my house as quickly as possible!!!!!! 😉
